Deck Safety Concerns

Having a deck in the back of your home is something that can be both convenient and attractive. It is a nice place to entertain a large group of friends while enjoying pleasant weather. It can be a pleasant, secluded spot to enjoy some fresh air. Every year there are millions of decks that are being built or renovated, and many times, the homeowner does this work on his or her own.

There are some very important things to keep in mind to make sure that your deck is also a safe place to spend your time. The first to consider is that there can be big differences between the load the deck needs to hold when it is empty and when it is full of people. This is even more important if you have a hot tub that could weigh over 5000 pounds when it is full.

The railings of your deck also need to be attached very well, since the tendency is for people to lean against them while talking. With many doing so at the same time, a poorly built railing could spell disaster.
