Does Your New Home Have A Grinder Pump?

Are you about to move into a home that has a grinder pump? If you are then it’s a good idea to know how one works as well as the dos and don’ts of using it.

A grinder pump is a device used to manage household waste which it does by grinding this waste into a slurry and pumping into a sewer system. This type of pump is needed in a home where the drainage system is at a level that is below or even the same as a public sewer line or septic tank, meaning that sewage is unable to flow quickly enough through the system on its own.

To keep a grinder pump well maintained there are some items you should never put down a drain or toilet. These items include diapers or feminine hygiene products, kitty litter and aquarium gravel, plastic, grease (which can build up and affect the tank) and toxic or caustic chemicals.

There are also things you should be aware when it comes to taking care of the pump, for example, during a power outage you will want to limit the amount of water you use, this is because a grinder pump requires electricity to operate so if there is no power the tank will become too full.  If you are going to be away, run the water long enough so that the pump activates, and the only water left in the tank is clean water. Never connect a grinder-pump to a sump pump as it will cost you more in electricity and overwork the pump.

As you can see, a grinder pump is an important device. If your home needs one, it’s good to find out how one works and how to keep it well maintained.
