Reasons The Basement Is Damp

When purchasing a new home, a home inspector will be able to point out some of the reasons why a basement might become damp but, if you are looking at a variety of properties before making your choice, what are some things that you can look out for yourself that would indicate there may be damp basement issues?

Firstly, you might experience damp in a basement simply because its position, below grade, makes it susceptible to issues like this. Among the other reasons why a basement will have damp is if the home does not have sufficient grade (or slope), this means water will not drain away from the property like it should leaving water to pool around the home’s foundation. Clogged gutters and downspouts are another cause of damp in a basement, downspouts should also be positioned in a certain way so that water is directed away from the property which prevents water from pooling around the home. When viewing a property, look out for these problems then ask your home inspector what it would involve to fix them.

While some causes of a damp basement can be easily noticed, others are a little harder to diagnose which highlights the importance of a home inspection. Your home inspector can help point out what problems you are likely to experience with a property that has a damp basement. They will also help you understand what that will involve if you decide to purchase a home with these types of issues.
